Storage guide
Self storage questions, answered
Practical guidance for comparing a unit, understanding the full cost and preparing for move-in.
Getting started
What is self storage?
Self storage gives you a private, lockable unit inside a managed facility. You choose the unit size and rental period, then move your belongings in and out under the provider's access rules.
How long can I rent a unit for?
Many providers offer rolling monthly terms, while some also support short stays or discounted longer commitments. Check the notice period and minimum term shown by the provider before booking.
What am I not allowed to store?
Providers normally prohibit illegal goods, flammable or explosive materials, food that can spoil, living things and hazardous substances. Each facility has its own full prohibited-items list.
Can I store a car or motorbike?
Some facilities offer vehicle storage or sufficiently large drive-up units. Confirm access width, vehicle insurance, battery rules and whether fuel restrictions apply.
Prices and contracts
How much does self storage cost?
Price depends on location, unit size, access level, rental length and current availability. Compare the recurring rent as well as introductory offers before deciding.
Are there costs beyond the advertised rent?
There can be separate charges for insurance, a lock, deposits, administration or extended access. Our results show known charges where a provider supplies them, but confirm the full total on the provider checkout.
Do I need to pay a deposit?
Deposit rules vary. Some providers take a refundable security deposit, while others do not. The provider quote and terms should explain the amount and refund conditions.
Why is a result marked Sponsored?
Sponsored means a provider has paid for additional visibility. The label does not mean it is the cheapest or best option, and you can still sort results by price, distance, size or provider.
Does moneysavingstorage receive commission?
We may receive commission when you continue to a provider and complete a purchase. This does not change the price shown to you, and paid placements are labelled.
Size and access
How do I choose the right unit size?
List the larger items first, then include boxes and awkward shapes. Our calculator adds a packing allowance and rounds up to a commonly available unit size.
What happens if I underestimate the space?
Ask the facility whether you can transfer to a larger unit. Availability and price may change, so allowing a modest packing buffer is usually cheaper than arranging a second unit.
Can I access my unit at any time?
Access hours vary by site and sometimes by unit type. Some locations offer 24-hour access; others limit entry to reception or gate hours. Select extended access in your search and verify it before booking.
What is climate-controlled storage?
Climate-controlled units keep temperature, and sometimes humidity, within a managed range. They can suit documents, instruments, electronics and other items that are sensitive to changing conditions.
Security, moving and cover
How secure are storage facilities?
Common measures include gated access, CCTV, alarms, perimeter fencing and individually locked units. Security differs by branch, so review the exact controls for the location you choose.
Do I need insurance for stored belongings?
Many providers require contents cover. You may be able to buy it from the provider or use a separate policy, provided it meets their terms. Check cover limits and exclusions.
Who keeps the key to my unit?
With a standard self-storage unit, you normally control the lock and key or access code. Some collection-storage services work differently, so review their access process.
Can providers help with a van or collection?
Some branches offer van hire, collection, trolleys or introductions to removal firms. Select van rental or collection in the quote form to surface relevant options, then confirm the service area and cost.
How should I prepare items for storage?
Use sturdy labelled boxes, empty and dry appliances, protect furniture with breathable covers and avoid placing heavy items on fragile ones. Leave a walkway if you will need regular access.
